Marc Anthony: The Truth About His Split from Jennifer Lopez

Marc Anthony: The Truth About His Split from Jennifer Lopez

Marc Anthony is speaking out on his highly publicized split from Jennifer Lopez. And, contrary to the various rumors and tabloid articles, Anthony tells ABC News that their separation is due to nothing more scandalous than irreconcilable differences.

"I'll always love Jennifer," Anthony says in an exclusive interview with Nightline reporter John Quinones, airing Thursday night on ABC -- but that doesn't mean they were meant to be. "It was a realization on both our parts. So you know it wasn't shocking," he says. "These things happen. It was a decision that we made jointly."

When Quinones asks Anthony if adultery was to blame for the marriage's breakup, the Grammy winner replies, "absolutely not."

Although Anthony and Lopez, both 42, were spotted together in the Hamptons in early August, Anthony's rep has confirmed that they were just spending time as a family with their 3-year-old twins Emme and Max.

As long as J.Lo and the King of Salsa stay friendly for the sake of their kids, it sounds like things will be just fine. And, for the time being, fans should expect to keep seeing the relatively amicable exes together on occasion, like on the reality show, Q'Viva! The Chosen, they're producing together.

"This is not a funeral. This is not a burial," Anthony says of his divorce. "This is just two people who came together and just realized -- and so I'm saying that it wasn't sustainable the way it was, and that's that."

Madonna Thanks Her Exes at Venice Film Festival

Madonna Thanks Her Exes at Venice Film Festival

In Hollywood, divorces tend to be nasty and public, so it's refreshing to hear an global superstar like Madonna have say something positive to say about not one, but both of former husbands.

The singing sensation, 53, had some surprising praise for her exes, English filmmaker Guy Ritchie and American actor-director Sean Penn while promoting her second feature film, W.E. During the press conference for the royal period drama's world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Thursday, Madge told reporters it's no coincidence she married to extremely gifted men.

"I am and was attracted to very creative people which is why I married Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, two very talented directors," Madonna said, according to the Huffington Post. "They both encouraged me as a director and as a creative person to do what I did, and they were both very supportive."

Considering Madonna has had a shaky history at the box-office (her indie directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, grossed a pitiful $22,406 in 2008), with her Golden Globe-winning performance in Evita a notable exception, she clearly needed the support.

W.E. follows two very different romances -- that of former King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and a contemporary relationship between a married woman (Abbie Cornish) and a Russian security guard (Oscar Isaac). According to Madonna, she feels a kinship to Wallis Simpson, for whom King Edward VIII abdicated the throne.

"I identified with her in that I think it's very common when people become celebrities or public figures or icons that we are often reduced to a soundbite and that you're given a few attributes and then you're not allowed to have anything more than that," she said.

Although W.E. has received mixed reviews from the festival, the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph critic said it "is rather better than expected; it's bold, confident and not without amusing moments."
